Mather Tower, Chicago, IL
Comprehensive investigation of the structural integrity of the structural steel frame of the 42-story building located at 75 East Wacker Drive, in downtown Chicago, IL. The building was constructed in 1929. The frame of the building suffered from extensive corrosion related distress due to a lack of maintenance of the exterior architectural terra cotta facade on the building. Work included removal of all cladding from the upper 2-1/2 stories of the building, followed by removal of the concrete encased steel frame. This was done in recognition of the fact that the steel was severely damaged by corrosion. Our work included structural engineering analysis of the upper 18-story tower of the building, to determine if pipe scaffolding could be erected around in to facilitate repairs to the exterior architectural terra cotta facade.
Finally, we designed and supervised the helicopter erection of a new steel framed 2-1/2-story cupola on the top of the 41st floor of the building. |
