Comprehensive investigation into the causes of extensive cracking in the exterior thin veneer terra cotta cladding on these two very large, block long, eight-story buildings located in downtown Los Angeles, CA. Cracking was primarily due to seismic activity. A major portion of the task in this project was to determine which earthquake in Southern California caused the primary damage to these 50-year-old buildings. Involved inspection of 100% of the exterior cladding system, removal, and laboratory testing of numerous terra cotta cladding samples and samples of the underlying concrete framing system.
