Kedzie-Belmont Bridge, Kennedy Expressway, Chicago, IL

During the course of a routine inspection of the steel structure of this elevated section of the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago we discovered complete failures of a number of the end connections for large steel stringers at their attachment to a deep, long span steel plate girder cross bent.  The failures were due to fatigue-induced cracking of the steel connection angles originating from field welds made in these connections.  This discovery prompted installation of emergency shoring and repairs by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
