KC Air Cargo Services
Six year project involving a very unique situation where D-cracking of a 15-inch thick airfield concrete pavement slab was being supported and propagated by an unknown subterranean water source.
Investigations were conducted to determine the causes and extent of the cracking, including removal of samples and petrographic examination. The water sources were identified as a leaking, large diameter fire water main, combined with damage caused to the underdrain system when the adjacent taxiway collector was widened in 2001. This damaged underdrain system directed the water to run underneath our client's concrete slab system. The areas of the slab subjected to this continual underground water source exhibited very serious D-cracking, to the point where loose debris forced the Owner to shut down the air cargo facility due to the possibility of the debris being sucked into the engines of the cargo aircraft using the facility. We assisted the legal team representing the Owner of the facility and the case was successfully mediated. |
