Hamilton & Allison Middle Schools, Wichita, KS
Rewerts was engaged by legal counsel for the Wichita School District to represent them in this construction dispute involving two 1917-era schools which had both been renovated several years prior.
Work included a comprehensive structural engineering investigation to determine the causes of structural distress that was severe enough to warrant closing down sections of both schools Both cases were successfully mediated and comprehensive structural repairs were made to both structures, allowing them to reopen. The program of structural repairs was complex and innovative. The work included jacking up sections of the third floor concrete floor system in one school, which had partially collapsed. Major repairs were made to both schools which involved removal of concrete topping that had been added during the renovation programs, which had overloaded and damaged the floor systems. Extensive epoxy injection of cracks in the floor system was undertaken, along with carbon fiber and external post-tensioning strengthening of those floor systems. |
