Dan Ryan Elevated Viaduct, Chicago, IL
Conducted a comprehensive, 100% hands–on inspection of the two-mile long elevated Dan Ryan Viaduct, located in downtown Chicago. At the time this was the busiest expressway in the nation, handling nearly 260,000 vehicles per day. The work included inspecting all aspects of the steel and concrete–framed viaduct from man–lift equipment. Coordinated and personally supervised five field crews during the performance of this work over a six–month period. This also included development of a comprehensive report on the condition of the viaduct and development of preliminary repair recommendations for the distress found; extensive study and field inspection and nondestructive testing to determine the extent of fatigue cracking in the structural steel components of the elevated viaduct; removing numerous concrete core samples from the piers over then length of the viaduct and subsequent laboratory testing to determine the condition of those piers, and to assist in determining the methods of repair for the distress found.
