Rewerts was engaged to perform a comprehensive investigation to determine the causes of widespread deterioration of ornamental cast stone around the perimeter of this 1924 era historic landmark structure in Kansas City.
Field evaluation and laboratory petrographic studies of small diameter core samples removed from selected cast stone elements revealed the damage was due to a combination of cracking in the outer layer of these dry tamp cast stone units caused by differential shrinkage of that outer layer relative to the inner core, followed by moisture intrusion, critical saturation and freeze thaw degradation of the inner core. Some old, alkali silicate reactivity was also found in the coarse aggregate in the inner core of some cast stone units. The deterioration was greatly aggravated by the application of a heavy, non-breathable coating to the cast stone units in a restoration program in 1987. |
