Rewerts was engaged by the Law Department in the City of Chicago to provide consulting architectural and structural engineering assistance and consulting when a woman was killed by a large section of glass which fell from the 27th floor of the 44 story south tower of the CNA building in downtown Chicago.
The engagement extended to monitoring the Owner's consulting engineering firm who was developing solutions to a long-standing problem with the exterior windows on the building. An agreement was eventually reached for the Owner to replace all of the exterior glass in the building with a higher tensile strength material. This work with the City of Chicago was followed by retention by a local law firm who represented the deceased woman's family. The suit was successfully settled for $18 million. |
